The Centre of African Studies (CAS) was established in 1984 to organise a two-year multi-disciplinary area study programme and to support ongoing activities on Africa in various departments within the University of Copenhagen. The University of Copenhagen was given the national responsibility for African studies because of the ongoing activities and expertise on Africa already existing in various departments within most faculties.

The staff members includes a Director and MSO Professor, an administrator, a Professor Emeritus, three Associate Professors, a librarian, four PhD students, two student assistants, two student counsellors and an exam and study abroad coordinator. A variable number of external lecturers are also affiliated with the Centre.
