The article discusses and contextualizes nineteenth-century politico-literary appropriations of the Danish St Knud Lavard (martyred in 1131) and the Norwegian St Olav (martyred in 1030), forcusing on the Danish playwright Baltasar Bang's tragedy Knud Lavard (1807) and the Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's speech on King Olav's saint's day 29 July 1897.
