CEMES Student: Spring seminar to bring current and future members of CEMES Student together. ";"With the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the breakdown of the historical transatlantic partnership with the United States, not to speak of the difficulty finding a new position towards the global south and China, Europe and the European Union is at a uniquely tumultuously moment in history. How does Europe address the new dangerous security situation with a less stable American ally? How can it organise its trade in a global trade system on the verge of collapse? How may international cooperation and the multilateral system be saved and equipped to address global challenges including climate change in a world where major superpowers have turned their back on the United Nations and international law? CEMES student brings together leading Danish experts on these questions for a summer debate at the Faculty of Humanities, and all are welcome to join. Are you a student (MA or BA) at University of Copenhagen, Lund University or Malmö University? Then you are specially invited to CEMES Student’s Spring Seminar: Europe in Turmoil. The seminar brings current and future members of CEMES Student together with cutting-edge researchers within European studies. The debate is followed by CEMES Student meeting, where you are invited to join CEMES Student and help plan and organise future public events on Europe. Programme 13:15 - 15:00: Panel debate: Europe in Turmoil: Public debate on how to respond to current challenges A discussion on current European challenges between you and four renowned researchers, each specialized in an aspect or region, who debate Europe’s current dramatic challenges. Panelists: Rasmus Sinding Søndergaard, Senior Researcher at Danish Institute for International Studies, DIIS Marlene Wind, Professor, Department of Political Science, UCPH Flemming Splidsboel, Senior Researcher at Danish Institute for International Studies, DIIS Jens Ladefoged Mortensen, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, UCPH Chairs: Morten Rasmussen, Associate Professor at the SAXO Institute, UCPH Emil Eiby Seidenfaden, Centre Coordinator, CEMES 15:15 - 16:01: CEMES Student: Hygge and planning We plan ahead together for CEMES Student’s fall term activities. From ancient times to our digital present, Strangers and Intimates: The Rise and Fall of Private Life traces the dramatic emergence of private life in Europe and the West and explores the reasons behind its current peril. In this sweeping history, cultural historian Tiffany Jenkins takes readers on an epic journey—from the strict separations of public and private in ancient Athens to the debates over conscience in post-Reformation Europe, the moral rigidity of the Victorian home, and the feminist movements of the 1970s that declared ""the personal is political,"" to the boundary-blurring demands of our digital age. Contrary to common assumptions, Jenkins argues that it is not big tech that has killed private life. By delving into a broader historical context, she examines the relationship between public and private spheres and the protean concept of privacy, offering a deeper and more nuanced understanding to contemporary privacy debates. Thrown off course due to severe weather, the ships crashed along Costa Rica’s Caribbean coastline near Punta Cahuita in March 1710. Approximately 690 Africans survived along with the Danish crew. The stories are corroborated because the Danish sailors managed to get on a ship from Portobello, Panama and returned home to narrate their stories. The Africans left behind on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast eventually dispersed, some intermarrying with the Indigenous Bribri people of the Talamanca region. 315 years later, descendants of one of the Africans on that ship lives in Cahuita and works with the local NGO, Centro Comunitario de Buceo Embajadores y Embajadoras del Mar which is an Afro-BriBri lead community stewarded diving program that initiated identifying the slave ships nine years ago. With the formal confirmation of the Danish ships on April 27th in Denmark and Costa Rica, this presentation highlights the work done in Costa Rica from community narratives as well as traces the voyage of the ships from their Danish departure in 1708 to their arrival and wreck in Costa Rica in March 1710. This research supports Dr. Gordon-Chipembere’s second historical fiction novel, 1710. Please register for participation here." In certain contexts, the term has an affinity with the ethical, while in other cases it is associated with what is specifically Christian. Correspondingly, Kierkegaard distinguishes between ‘religiousness A’ (the Socratic, human religiousness) and ‘religiousness B’ (the paradoxically Christian religiousness). In addition, ‘the religious’ can denote the hermeneutic lens through which Kierkegaard wants his writings to be read in distinct difference from an ‘aesthetic’ reading. But what does it mean to read Kierkegaard religiously? And is that necessarily the best reading? On closer inspection, the term ‘the religious’ turns out to encompass a very broad range of meanings, which include such more or less synonymous terms as ‘the eternal’, ‘the eternal power’ and ‘the majestic’ as well as a long series of other transcendent signifiers and metaphors which are in need of careful scrutiny. The intent of conference is to open up and develop this range of meanings, but the conference also aims at more than that, and is, in addition, directed at exploring Kierkegaard's relationship with religions in general and to shed light on his understanding of Judaism, Islam and Buddhism, among others. What did Kierkegaard in fact know about these religions? Did he permit himself to be inspired or provoked by them? And how do Jewish, Buddhist, and Islamic thinkers view Kierkegaard’s ideas about God, the practice of religion/devotion, the nature of the self, and scripture? What is his voice? Where is the emphasis placed in readings of his work? In a postcolonial world order, is a secular reading of Kierkegaard the way to an increased understanding of the matters that most concerned him? In other words, can he enter into a dialogue with other religions without letting go of what is specifically Kierkegaardian about being Kierkegaard? Thus, the conference poses the question of what an investigation of other religions shows about “the religious” in Kierkegaard. Dermed, mener mange, at forsoning danner grundlag for nye begyndelser. In this context, the original value in question will be supported by Kierkegaard’s criticism of the Danish National Church. In this context, the objections made by Kierkegaard to the religious understanding in Denmark are aimed at analyzing the popular perception of religion. Kierkegaard’s criticisms of the Church can be gathered in three stages: The first is that the historical mission of the Church has adopted a widespread understanding of religion, the second is that the Church wants to give a mass direction to religion by using the power of the concept of the people. The third is that the Church has served the popular perception of religion under the claims of rational theology. In light of the obtained input, Kierkegaardian criticisms of the historical mission of the Danish National Church, the concept of the people, and the relationship of rational theology with the popular perception of religion will be discussed. The evaluation of the popular perception of religion from the perspective of an existential philosopher Kierkegaard is related to the fact that it has adopted a goal regarding what should be at the center of the discussion on whether religion or religious life should be individual or mass. In the discussions on religion, the increase or abundance of people who belong to any religion has caused a belief that religion is strong and true. Accordingly, the religious belief that is widely accepted in society is also thought to be effective and strong. On the other hand, it should be noted that some criticisms and objections expressing religion or faith through numerical output are contrary to the reality of faith itself. Because a truth must be superior in number to be valid is a questionable perspective. The popular perception of religion corresponds to the numerical superiority of religion and its prevalence in society. What is emphasized here is not religion, but the prevalence of religion and its support based on the majority in society." But God is in the details, as they say; here I will analyze one Kierkegaardian text in detail, Fear and Trembling, paying close attention to how Kierkegaard, through his invented pseudonym Johannes de silentio, responds to the Phaedrus’s indictment and its recommendation of a form of discourse that practices dialectic, that accepts “reminding” rather than “teaching” as its proper function, and that pays proper attention to the “soul” of the learner: like the Platonic solution, Kierkegaard speaks through a pseudonym who practices dialectic and resists attempts to treat him as an authority. Johannes’s “dialectic,” while not Hegelian, is also not precisely Socratic or Platonic, and the process of “reminding” no longer leads to the recollection of eternal truth; instead, built upon a foundation of lyricism, it produces shock, paradox, and the need for decision. I particularly analyze the literary methods by which Johannes introduces themes and modifies the reader’s mood to prepare the make authentic dialectic possible. The question posed by none other than Pontius Pilate during the trial of Jesus is more relevant to theology today than ever before. Whereas early Christian confessional theology and dogmatic theology up to the Enlightenment assumed that their statements were true, or at least wanted to be true, in 20th and 21st century theology there is a big hesitation in this regard. What significance can biblical texts and confessional traditions still have for theological statements today? How can theological statements still be made without immediately running the risk of negating reason and becoming unscientific? The lecture will take up precisely these questions and, taking into account theological positions of the 20th century, will try to work out how to deal with truth claims in theology. The considerations culminate in the thesis, based on Paul Tillich, that a Christian approach to the question of truth must always fulfil a Christological criterion in order to avoid turning into heresy or heterodoxy. 12.00-13.00 Lunch 13.00-14.00 Lecture with the Church History Section/Copenhagen Centre for Christianity and Antiquity: Juliette Day 14.00-14.30 Coffee Break 14.30-19.00 Conference Lectures 13.00-14.00 Professor Emeritus Mogens Müller, Faculty of Theology, Copenhagen “God as Pure Love.
