"Africa Seminar: Slow Fashion and Cyclical Time: On the Temporality of Garments in Urban Africa Today";"Centre of African Studies";"2026-02-10";"15:15";"2026-02-10";"17:00";"Room 8B.1.14, Wangari Maathai Auditorium";"";"Global textile production today is shaped by linear value chains and a temporal logic that fills weeks, hours, and minutes with as many product sales as possible. This logic fuels a consumer culture in which garments are discarded as soon as they lose their sense of newness, and it rests on an abstract notion of time as a force determining decay detached from the material world. Yet in African cities facing the consequences of global textile waste, new initiatives seek to both curb overconsumption and challenge the temporal imperatives of fast fashion. This seminar draws on examples from community-based fashion events in Nairobi and fashion businesses in Kampala to explore how temporality in textile can be challenged, unlearned, or exploited. Grounded in African philosophies of time and contemporary fashion interventions, Mumbi shows how fashion can be understood as a temporal practice. Many African fashion practices operate within event-based, relational, and reparative temporalities, where garments gain meaning through use, repair, circulation, and social life rather than linear obsolescence. Here, slowness becomes a decolonial strategy that challenges industrial notions of time, value, and waste, making fashion a medium for alternative futures and ethical relations. At the same time, Johanne’s upcoming fieldwork in Kampala explores what happens when slow fashion practitioners tap into a global industry driven by short lead times and product‑per‑minute logics. Her work with upcycling studios that transform imported used clothing into high‑end designs examines how these actors navigate European fashion circuits, encounter conventional brands, and attempt to carve out space for circular and slow business models without being absorbed by a fast and linear industry. Presenters: Johanne Rebsdorf is a PhD-student at the Centre of African Studies at UCPH. With a background in business Anthropology her research focusses on Ugandan circular fashion and the import of used clothing to Africa, as well as the role of African fashion studios in the green transition of the textile industry. Mumbi Macharia is a researcher, writer, poet, and performing artist working at the intersections of African temporality, culture, and decolonial thought. With a background in Law and African Studies, her work examines how time is lived, marked, and resisted through everyday practices such as language, art, and fashion. From this perspective, it argues that Kierkegaard’s concepts of “faith” and “earnestness” can constitute a form of self-realizing happiness for contemporary individuals living through anxiety and despair. Grounded in Kierkegaard’s understanding of the human being as “the single individual,” faith and earnestness are disclosed not merely as religious or psychological categories, but as an existential “upbuilding”—a movement continually directed toward authentic selfhood. Within this movement, anxiety and despair are interpreted not as pathological states, but as existential phenomena encountered: anxiety functions as the best tutor that cultivates “earnestness,” while despair marks the failure of authentic selfhood and, at the same time, the decisive moment in which the individual can leap into “faith.” Rather than justifying faith within the framework of normative ethical theory, this paper seeks a philosophical justification that discloses faith as an existential movement repeatedly enacted within the structure of human existence itself, thereby showing that the movement of faith can be applied to contemporary individuals at the existential level, without adherence to Christian doctrine." Photo: Olivia Mason Olivia Mason (Newcastle University) is a lecturer in Geography, with a focus on cultural and political geography. Mason's work sits across cultural, environmental, and political geography, and is broadly centred on mobility politics and resource colonialism. In this seminar, she reflects on walking to address broader questions in political geography surrounding power, scale, mobility, embodiment, and knowledge production. Walking still remains a method and practice that has received little attention by political geographers, and this can be traced to a wider absence of discussions of methodology within political geography. Yet the embodied aspects of walking can enable a creative and critical relationship with nature, place, politics and space, reengaging key concepts in political geography such as territory, borders, and the state. Through empirical research conducted on walking trails and with walking groups in the Middle East and North Africa, this seminar explores the situated political geographies of walking and how walking can enable embodied and intimate political geographies to emerge. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with and questions from participants. The lecture will be followed by comments from Professor Susan Whyte from the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen. A reception with snacks and drinks will take place afterwards at CAS. Abstract: In Sierra Leone, teenage pregnancy is commonly framed as a health crisis or risk within public health and development discourses. This research challenges these narrow framings of teenage pregnancy by situating them within the lived realities of girls and their families, and by demonstrating how cultural, moral and relational factors shape girls’ reproductive experiences and future trajectories. Drawing on eleven months of ethnographic fieldwork in Adonkia, Sierra Leone, the research explores how pregnancy and early motherhood are interpreted, managed and reproduced within kinship networks, religious value systems, and gendered expectations. This seminar sheds light on the concept of reproductive misfortune to understand uncertainty and social reproduction. Rather than perceiving misfortune as a negative, individualised experience, the concept illustrates the shifting narratives and religious meaning-making that acknowledge the challenging and generative trajectories girls and their families navigate in their pursuit of security. By combining this concept with the analytic lenses of social navigation and gender performativity, the seminar discusses how young mothers actively negotiate pregnancy, motherhood, schooling and respectability in contexts marked by poverty and different layers of uncertainty. The seminar contributes to interdisciplinary debates across anthropology, African studies, gender studies, public health and development studies, showing how teenage pregnancy exceeds its framing as a public health concern, thereby broadening the discourse on teenage reproduction, providing a more holistic understanding of reproduction as a socially embedded and negotiated process in contemporary Sierra Leone." Yet beneath its optimistic rhetoric lies a fundamental contradiction: intellectual property operates as a pervasive infrastructure that simultaneously enables and constrains the deep tech project, often undermining its stated social aims. This lecture by Gemma Milne examines how IP - as both legal device and cultural ideology - dominates the ""lab to market"" process through three key mechanisms: the construction of the scientist-entrepreneur subject, the assetisation of knowledge, and valuation practices designed to attract venture capital. Rather than efficiently translating science into social benefit, current IP regimes orient deep tech toward investor expectations, wealth extraction, and knowledge monopolisation. The result is a ""closed world structure"" that forecloses alternatives and perpetuates technocapitalist logics under the guise of problem-solving innovation. Drawing on critical science and technology studies, I argue that deep tech cannot fulfil its revolutionary promise without disentangling itself from IP's material and rhetorical grip. The challenge is not whether to support deep tech, but whether we can imagine - and build - alternative pathways for materialising science that serve equity and justice rather than capital accumulation. Deep Tech, Otherwise…perhaps? Gemma Milne is a Lecturer in Innovation and Technology Management at the University of Glasgow, and a writer and broadcaster focused on cultural, economic and social concerns of science and technology. Her research focuses on the political economy of lab-to-market processes, with a particular focus on alternative organisational structures for 'deep tech’ (e.g. biotech, quantum technologies, space technologies, advanced manufacturing etc). Gemma is author of 'Smoke & Mirrors: How Hype Obscures the Future and How to See Past It'; has written for outlets such as The Guardian, WIRED, Forbes, the BBC and others; and is co-host of the Radical Science podcast. Gemma has been an Expert Assessor for the European Commission and Innovate UK, a Fellow of the Institute for the Future of Work, an Innovation Jury Member for SXSW and a Scout for Backed VC. In Africa, states, firms, social groups, and individuals have incorporated a wide array of technical artefacts (digital, logistical, security-related, and informational) into domains as diverse as public administration, the provision of social services, markets, economic production, and cultural practices. Within political and developmental imaginaries, these technologies are increasingly endowed with a quasi-salvific function: they are presented as solutions capable of overcoming underdevelopment, following the historical failure of structural adjustment programmes, economic liberalization, and the promises associated with the “communication revolution” driven by the widespread adoption of mobile telephony and the expansion of the internet in the early 2000s. More recently, African states have turned to surveillance technologies, biometric systems, drones, satellites and digital public infrastructures (DPI) to address a broad range of social, political, and security challenges. This process of technicization, however, unfolds within a context marked by a proliferation of uncertainties and states of emergency (health-related, demographic, humanitarian, ecological, economic, and migratory) that affect Africa as much as the rest of the world. Yet, contrary to recurrent diagnoses emphasizing the weakness, poverty, or corruption of African administrations, many states display a relatively unexpected capacity for resilience and adaptation in the face of these constraints. This seminar proposes to analyse the foundations of this adaptive capacity through the lens of the concept of the “agile society.” It examines how African societies confront uncertainty through a combination of technological solutions, institutional bricolage, and ongoing practices of improvisation and negotiation. Far from constituting a simple process of technological catch-up, this agility reveals specific forms of governing through emergency, in which technologies function simultaneously as instruments of management, power, and the reconfiguration of relations between the state, society, and infrastructures. Georges Macaire Eyenga is a researcher at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris and an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the*University of Dschang, Cameroon. His research focuses on African technoscapes, with particular attention to the ways in which African governments mobilize technological solutions to sustain state capacity in the face of political demands and internal and external pressures that threaten stability and durability. He has published several peer-reviewed articles on contemporary technological infrastructures and devices, including surveillance systems, biometric technologies, drones, digital platforms, and satellite internet. His current research examines scientific collaborations and practices of quantification in forest ecology in Central Africa. Photo: Otto Holmström. Source: Kulturmagasinet, Helsingborgs museer Researchers Svava Riesto and Henriette Steiner (University of Copenhagen) will present their project Learning from Collaboration – Building Future Practice. The research explores the forms of collaboration that shaped Denmark’s remarkable building boom from 1960 to 1975 – a period of technological innovation, social change, and holistic thinking in architecture and planning. By examining how architects, landscape architects, engineers, and planners worked together across professional, social, and geographic boundaries, the project sheds light on both the successes and challenges of these collaborations. What made them possible? Where did conflicts arise? And what can we learn from these dynamics today? The findings offer a richer understanding of the built environment and provide inspiration for contemporary efforts toward more diverse and sustainable practices in construction and urban development. This seminar will be an opportunity to reflect on history while looking ahead to future collaborations. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the Öresund Comparative Borderland Research Group and questions from participants. This seminar is open to the public. Bios Svava Riesto Svava Riesto is Professor of Landscape Architecture History and Theory at the University of Copenhagen and leader of the Research Group for Landscape Architecture and Urban Histories. With a background in art history and landscape architecture, Svava Riesto intersects historical research on buildings, cities and landscapes with heritage studies and other interdisciplinary fields. Henriette Steiner Henriette Steiner is Professor in the Section for Landscape Architecture and Planning and Society at the University of Copenhagen, where she currently serves as Head of Section. Henriette Steiner works on the history and philosophy of architecture, landscapes and cities. Through her research and teaching, Steiner strives to inspire more self-reflective, diverse, equitable, and compassionate spatial practices for designing cities and landscapes. Now our only chance of success is to appeal instead to people’s self-interest. I shall explain how self-interest can be harnessed to fight climate change. It will require large changes to the world’s economic and financial system. What is then the role for climate activists? Not to continue appealing to morality, because that has failed. Activists must push governments into making the institutional changes that will be required. Bio John Broome is Emeritus White’s Professor of Moral Philosophy, University of Oxford and Honorary Professor at the Australian National University. One of two philosophers involved in writing the ICCP 5th Assessment report. Author of Climate Matters: ethics in a warming world and ‘Against denialism’, The Monist, 102 (2019), pp. 110–29. Broome has had a substantial impact on the moral discussion relating to climate change. Professor Broome is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburg, the British Academy, and Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2007 he became Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and in 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from Lund University." Complying with this demand, however, is bound up with certain difficulties. First of all, Kierkegaard’s writings present a considerable plurality which can be seen not only in the difference between the pseudonymous and the edifying works, but is also attested to by often totally differing themes, strongly divergent textuality, and unabashed plurality of voices. Thus, the ideal of a totality appears to be threatened by the factual plurality of the writings. Secondly, Kierkegaard’s writings make it very clear that, over time and over the course of his writing, their author alters his position with respect to a long series of subjects – for example, woman, the (in)commensurability of inwardness, and his task as an author – just as he continually reconsiders his position with respect to such figures as Luther, Mynster, and his own earthly-all-too-earthly father. Once again, the plurality threatens the unity – something Kierkegaard least of all desired. As he wrote with biting irony in late September 1855: “Be a nitwit, have one view today, another tomorrow, then once again the one you had yesterday, and then, yet again, a new one on Friday; be a nitwit, make yourself into multiple persons, parcel yourself out: have one view anonymously and another under your name . . . and you shall see: all difficulties disappear . . . .” The intricate relationship between the individual writing and the opus interpreted as a totality reactualizes the classic discussion about the real Kierkegaard. Or, to put it another way: To whom, to what, and to which texts does one refer when one refers to Kierkegaard as the guarantor of the correctness of one’s interpretation? The hermeneutical implications of these reflections do not remain shyly in the background – to what extent can – or ought – Kierkegaard’s notion of “totality” have an influence on the interpretation of an individual work? And is Kierkegaard the best interpreter of Kierkegaard? If not: How is the work – including Kierkegaard’s own interpretation of that work – to be interpreted? How can the authorship both have its “dear reader” as addressee and be Kierkegaard’s own “upbringing and development,” as is maintained in The Point of View? What is the relation between the published writings and the journals? And between the author Kierkegaard and the Copenhagen citizen of the same name? Are they both part of the authorship – and, all things considered, how is an authorship defined? What course of development – theologically, philosophically, ideologically, rhetorically, biographically, etc. – takes place within the authorship, and by what other situations and factors are they conditioned? And which concerns and themes continue unchanged through authorship? Is it possible to isolate Kierkegaard’s implicit reader and connect such a reader with Kierkegaard’s explicit reader in the year 2026? Is a secular reading of Kierkegaard a promising rebirth of Kierkegaard on terms of later-modernity, or is it merely arbitrary cherry-picking? Are we to protect Kierkegaard – including against Kierkegaard himself and especially against the late Kierkegaard? When, in brief, is Kierkegaard Kierkegaard – and Kierkegaard?
