Lacan on Luther and the birth of the modern subject
Herman Westerink, Prof., Radboud Univ., Nijmegen Title: Lacan on Luther and the birth of the modern subject
In Jacques Lacan’s seminars, notably the seminar on the ethics of psychoanalysis (1959-1969), one finds occasional references to Luther as a figure introducing a new direction of thought that paves the way for Freudian meta-psychology. For Lacan, modernity starts with Luther and the Reformation introducing a new way to think the subject. He claims that without recognition the filiation with Reformation theology, one cannot understand the fundamental problems psychoanalysis addresses. In this lecture Lacan’s views on these fundamental problems and the main aspects of this new direction of thought will be explored and critically examined.
