Materiality, the Senses and the History of Liturgical Experience

Abstract

How can the historian uncover the experience of worshippers in the past? Is it at all possible? In this paper I will attempt to show some of the possibilities and limitations of such an investigation using new research into the 'history of experience', and drawing upon examples from late antique and early medieval textual and material sources.
