How do we understand the sacred across religious traditions, and what happens when we encounter the sacred story of another tradition?

Taking Retelling Sacred Stories: Our Journeys to a Shared Sacred Story (Orbis Books, 2025) as its point of departure, this event brings together participants from different religious and academic backgrounds for a public panel conversation on sacred narratives, religious difference, and the possibilities to connect across traditions.

Ahead of the event, each panelist reads and reflects upon a sacred story from a religious or spiritual tradition other than their own. The panel takes these encounters as its starting point, exploring what happens when we seek to understand another tradition’s story on its own terms. What feels recognisable, and what remains unfamiliar? Can encountering another tradition’s sacred story illuminate something within our own? And can we speak of a shared sacred story while still respecting the differences that make each tradition distinct?

The event will take the form of a moderated interreligious and cross-tradition panel conversation, followed by an opportunity for questions and dialogue with the audience.
