Culture, cognition, and cultural memory: linking text and image in Antiquity
Many studies of texts regard only the textual context. Texts, however, are expressions within a culture. As cultures find expression in materiality and pictoriality as well, all these expressions should be studied in dialogue with each other. The seminar focuses on pictoriality and explains how images can illuminate texts. This will be illustrated with examples from Biblical Studies, which knows this practice as ‘iconographic exegesis'. Cultural memory can come into play, when objects or images have got their own history.

Weaving the world: globalisation and Chinese Christian missionary networks
This seminar approaches the much-debated concept of globalisation through the metaphor of weaving. By doing so, it perceives globalisation as the context and accentuates the role of human agents in ‘weaving the word'. Chinese missionaries are but one example of significant context makers. The seminar introduces aspects of Chinese Christian missionary networks which might help in theory building on globalisation and theology.
