En août 1668, Flavio Chigi organisa un banquet spectaculaire dans son Casino alle Quattro Fontane pour célébrer la nouvelle famille papale, les Rospigliosi. Ce spectacle en plein air commença dans l’après-midi, avec une parade du cardinal qui défila dans la ville en carrosse, accompagné des dames Chigi et Rospigliosi, prenant ainsi symboliquement possession du ter- ritoire de Rome. Le soir, un banquet fut organisé par Carlo Fontana avec des sculptures alimentaires sophistiquées, des parfums, de la musique ainsi que des machines ingénieuses dont certaines produisaient des éclairs. Les invités et les artistes, ainsi que le jardin et la nourriture, furent littéralement mis en scène au sein d’une chorégraphie élaborée, destinée à montrer la puissance du cardinal Chigi. Pour finir, les monuments comestibles éphémères furent ingérés par les invités. Grâce à de nouveaux documents d’archives et à une approche inspirée des études de la performance et de la performativité du genre, ce chapitre jette un éclairage nouveau sur ce banquet.
In August 1668, Flavio Chigi organised a spectacular banquet in his Casino alle Quattro Fontane to celebrate the new papal family, the Rospigliosi. This outdoor performance began in the afternoon, with the cardinal parading through the city in a carriage, accompanied by the Chigi and Rospigliosi noblewomen, symbolically taking possession of the territory of Rome. At night, a banquet was staged by Carlo Fontana with sophisticated food sculptures, ingenious lightning-producing and theatrical machines, fra- grances and music. The guests and the artists, along with the garden and the food, were literally staged with elaborate choreography aimed at displaying Chigi’s power. The ephemeral edible monuments were finally ingested by the guests. Based on new archival documents, this chapter sheds new light on this banquet from perspectives of performance studies.
