Launch event: Scarcity, Natural Resources and Conflict in Africa

Natural landscape in Africa

This event marks the publication of the special issue “Scarcity, Natural Resources and Conflict in Africa“ and moves the discussion forward. We present and discuss a wide range of localized studies, from across the continent, that link notions of resource use and scarcity to conflict and its violent potential on the African continent. Combined, the collection of presentations argues that within the past 10 years, notions of resource scarcity, and levels of resource competition and contestation, have reinforced and added new dimensions to long-standing trends in conflict relations in Africa.

We will discuss the role of African states in a new world order with increasing instability and a push for nature conservation expansions, investments in solar panels, windmills, and geothermal energy, and demands for precious minerals by the tech industry that play a central role in the global green energy transition.
