CAS at AEGIS Summer School, Cagliari, Italy
CAS was represented at the Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies (AEGIS) Summer School, held on 3-7 July 2018 in Cagliari, Italy, where PhD fellow Jacob Worsøe delivered a presentation on ‘Social Nature and the Production of Uganda’s Forest Landscapes’.
The Summer School is an opportunity for PhD researchers to present fresh empirical data, reflections and knowledge emerging from their research about Africa. The theme of this year’s Summer School was ‘Connections and Disruptions’, aligned with the theme of the 8th biennial European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) that will be held in Edinburgh 12-14 June 2019. The Summer School aimed to prepare PhD researchers for their anticipated participation in ECAS8. Jacob Worsøe’s presentation focused on how forests in Uganda historically have been constructed conceptually and materially as pristine wilderness, as a remnant from a pre-human era, in spite of evidence suggesting that social interaction with the forests has been present throughout the forests’ entire ecological history.
