Yingjie Zhao, CAS, at a world conference on Humanitarian Studies
CAS was represented at the 5th bi-annual IHSA conference took place in The Hague, The Netherlands from 27 to 29 August 2018, where PhD fellow Yingjie Zhao delivered a presentation on “China and Chinese NGOs’ Humanitarian aid in Africa: the case of the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation”.
This conference was hosted by the International Humanitarian Studies Association (IHSA), which is a network engaged with the study of humanitarian crises caused by natural disaster, conflict or political instability. The theme of this conference was “(Re-) Shaping Boundaries in Crisis and Crisis Response”.
Yingjie’s presentation was one part of a panel on “Humanitarianism from below: analyzing the views, values and practices of local and national aid actors”, which focused on the practices and reasons for China and Chinese NGOs delivering humanitarian aid in Africa and showed the expanding role of Chinese NGOs from development aid and natural disasters to refugees response in the context of violent and conflict.
