Eritrean Conflict on European Territory
In recent news, Associate Professor Stig Jensen details the continual conflict between Eritreans in Europe. Recently, 67 people were taken by the police in Copenhagen as a result of violent counter protests against an Eritrean party. This depicts the divide between people from the region as many worry about the regimes influence internationally. The situation, however, is far more complicated as it stems from Eritrea’s fight for independence from Ethiopia. Many are disillusioned with the continual support seen throughout the world for the Eritrean government as its recent freedom from Ethiopia has only affected the bureaucratic level without impacting its citizens. This leads to the main divide between those who claim an Eritrean identity; those who support the regime, or at least seem too, and those who oppose it. This divide between Eritrean immigrants has led to increased violence throughout Scandinavia.
