Leonie Jegen is a visiting researcher at CAS in October and November 2023, linked to the CERTIZENS Research Project (https://teol.ku.dk/english/dept/certizens-certifications-of-citizenship-in-africa/). She is a doctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam's Institute for Social Science Research and recipient of the Rosa Luxemburg doctoral scholarship.  Her work considers the negotiation of EU - Senegalese borderwork in the field of anti-migrant smuggling. Drawing on political ethnography, her approach is informed by a sensitivity to colonial continuities playing out in the multi-scalar negotiation processes that accompany the making of Senegalese counter migrant smuggling governance. Doing an article-based PhD, while at CAS Leonie is writing a paper on the link between civil registration programes and borderwork. Through her affiliation to CERTIZENS in particular, she has the opportunity to exchange with and learn from a rich community of scholars based both in the European and African contexts who work on questions related to civil registration.
