Muslim Political Dissent in Coastal East Africa

Cover of the Journal of East African Studies

Visiting researcher and former Marie Curie Fellow at the Centre of African Studies Hans Olsson, has recently published a co-authored article in the Journal of Eastern African Studies titled ‘Muslim political dissent in coastal East Africa: complexities, ambiguities, entanglements’. The article highlights the varying discontinuities, parallels, and responses to Muslim political dissent in the coastal region within Kenya and Tanzania. Highlighting not only the responses to militant jihadi activity by the US, Kenyan, and Tanzanian governments but also the perceptions of Muslim citizens, the article seeks to explore the violence and civil unrest Muslim political dissent evokes. Furthermore, it explores Muslim civil activism and what it means for the future of other Muslims who seek to engage in political dissent. Ultimately, the article unravels what it means to compare people and movements within this large swath of territory and how it can best be examined to further understand the landscape that is Muslim political dissent.
