How did Catholicism die out in post-Reformation Denmark? Between persistence of rites and recusant families. First remarks from an ongoing research.
Federico Zuliani's doctoral research (covering the years 1536-1629) attempts, on the one hand, to study the resistance in post-Reformation Denmark of Catholic believers and, on the other hand, to investigate the survival of late Medieval Catholic religious practices in the newly established Danish Lutheran Church. The seminar is going to offer, in a first part, an overview of the research while, in a second one, few, still open, questions will be raised and discussed. Among these: the methodological risks of a comparative approach based on German examples, the existence of a pro-Catholic nobility in post-Reformation Denmark, the value as source of Catholic literature especially written for the reconversion of Scandinavia.
All are welcome!
