Forms of Paradox in Erasmus and Luther
Afternoon-seminar with Prof. Andrea Vestrucci, University of Bamberg.
In his talk, Andrea Vestrucci will explore the polymorphic structure of paradox in the works of Erasmus and Luther, focusing especially on their theological controversy of 1524–1525. He argues that both thinkers employed paradox not merely as a rhetorical flourish, but as a means of articulating distinct theological and epistemological frameworks. Accordingly, the talk contends that their debate should be understood not simply as a dogmatic disagreement, but as a deeper conflict over the semantic foundations of theological meaning-making.
