Method-Contra-Method: Theologia Crucis as Critique of Virtue Theory in a Theologia Gloriae

Luther took issue with two forms of theology in his time: virtue-theory-inflected theology and a theology of glory. These two theologies are not disconnected for Luther. Rather, both present the individual as using method to control people's actions or to make God fit human notions. Luther's proposal in a theology of the cross responds to both, providing a method that subverts our rational expectation of the a-rational God.

Bio

Peter Jonescu is a doctoral candidate at Heidelberg University, currently a guest researcher at Copenhagen, writing on the idea of history through Luther's De servo arbitrio. Jonescu researches and teaches trans-disciplinarily through historical-systematic theology and queer theory, especially the psychoanalysis dimension.
