KU Festival Panel: Decolonizing knowledge – who gets to produce, own, and share knowledge?

On Friday, 23 May, Natacha Klein Käfer, assistant professor at the Centre for Privacy Studies and board member of the School of Global Health, will participate in a panel discussion on knowledge, power, and decolonialization in universities at the KU Festival.

Universities have historically played a role in colonial processes, and the University of Copenhagen is no exception. This panel discussion will explore the key questions:

  • Who holds knowledge and power in the university?
  • What types of knowledge are produced and legitimized?
  • How is the university complicit in past and present colonial projects?
  • What does it mean to decolonize the university, and how can researchers, staff, and students help transform it into an institution that works towards redressing and dismantling these ongoing injustices?

Joining Natacha Klein Käfer in this discussion are Maansi Parpiani, Thibault Adrien Capelle, and Anja Simonsen, with moderation by Kavishya Umendri Kulatunga and Fernando Racimo.

Natacha Klein Käfer is leading the theme Health and Science at the Centre for Privacy Studies. In her extensive and interdisciplinary research, she examines historical intersections between health and privacy. She explores how people protected medical knowledge and personal health information in the early modern period (1500-1800) when legal safeguards were absent. By bringing historical insights into contemporary global health debates, her work fosters a nuanced understanding of privacy and healthcare.

All students and employees at the University of Copenhagen are welcome to join this important discussion.
