Centre Director Mette Birkedal Bruun engaged in two insightful panel debates at Folkemødet 2025
Centre Director Mette Birkedal Bruun participated in two insightful panel debates at this year’s Folkemødet on Bornholm, both addressing key questions about the ethics and future of research. In her roles as professor, presidium member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, and vice chair of The Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy (DFIR), Mette served as moderator for both discussions.
One debate on health research—facilitated by The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and The Danish National Research Foundation—focused on the question of which diseases and health areas are prioritized in research today and, more fundamentally, who should be able to determine which fields receive prioritization and funding.
Another important discussion centred on the career paths of PhD graduates after completing their studies. Many PhDs in Denmark pursue careers outside the university. The debate explored whether their expertise is being fully utilized and who holds responsibility for ensuring that talent is secured. This session was organized by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and DFIR.
As part of the leadership of DFIR, Mette Birkedal Bruun works to promote the development of Danish research, technology, and innovation for the benefit of society. DFIR, an independent council, is also tasked with providing impartial research and innovation policy advice to the Minister for Higher Education and Science and other stakeholders.
Additionally, Mette is a member of the presidium of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, where she represents the humanities division. The Academy, first established in 1742, aims to strengthen the position of science in Denmark, including promoting fundamental, frontier research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
