New Guest Researcher at PRIVACY

This month, PRIVACY is pleased to welcome guest researcher Dr. Natasha Gordon-Chipembere.

Last week, Natasha held a workshop on her historical fiction novel about the Black Madonna, Finding La Negrita, set in 1634 colonial Cartago, Costa Rica. The workshop—centred on the relationship between historical research and historical fiction—was met with enthusiasm by the PRIVACY team, who contributed many insightful questions and reflections.

Dr. Natasha Gordon-Chipembere holds a PhD in English from the University of South Africa. She has a professional background spanning work as an author, editor, writing coach, and professor. She has received numerous awards and grants as a writer, including two Fulbright Fellowships and three PSC-CUNY Research Awards for her work on Afro-Costa Ricans.

Natasha has lectured extensively on issues of representing Black womanhood. She is an expert on the narrative of South African Sarah Baartman and her legacy in the 21st century. Her current research is on Afro-Latins in the Diasporas, specifically Afro-Costa Ricans.

On Wednesday 25 June, Natasha will host a seminar titled “Costa Rica, two Danish slave ships and the rewriting of history”, in which she will present her ongoing book project centred on two Danish slave ships that sank near the coast of Costa Rica.
