Arc-et-Senans: La saline royale (1771–1806): notions of privacy in an industrial ideal community

Notions of privacy in the societal programme of La saline royale. Focus: C.-N. Ledoux’s royally sponsored plan (cf. L'architecture considérée sous le rapport de l'art, des mœurs et de la législation (1804)), envisaging an ideal life- and work-space; spatial zones assigned to various classes and to families, hygiene, leisure and religion; a lay-out facilitating surveillance; discussions and practical solutions regarding the role and position of religion and law.

Research on privacy will add decisive new insights to research into, e.g., Ledoux, Enlightenment architecture and utopias; see, e.g.,
