The Moravian brother Michael Cröger (1714–1800) was chosen by the lot to replace
the diarist of the Single Brethren Choir in Copenhagen. This paper is a small case
study examining how, in the diary, Michael Cröger presents a frequent use of
watchwords to the Moravian Society in Copenhagen – a practice closely linked to
the devotional practice of self-examination.Through the practice of watchwords and
self-examination, Michael Cröger introduced a more individualized Christianity
and an extension of lay authority, which became an innovative factor beyond the
Moravian congregation in Copenhagen and contributed to the religious awakening
movements of the 19th century in Denmark
