Cultic Terminology in Megillat Esther: Subtle Traces of an Unseen God

Guest lecture by associate professor Max Rogland, Erskine Theological Seminary, Columbia, South Carolina, USA

It is well known that Megillat Esther carefully avoids mentioning God or practices such as prayer that would point directly to God. However, a close examination of the Hebrew version of Esther reveals terminology and concepts possessing distinctive associations with the Old Testament cult. That is, the narrative contains a number of verbal cues that evoke the Temple’s furnishings, functionaries, structure, and rituals.

This lends a more “religious” coloring to the narrative than has typically been acknowledged, and it has implications for how one analyzes the book.
