Prof. Dr. Volker Leppin: Two Sides of a Medal. Luther attacking the Jews and the Pope (room to be announced)

Luther's polemics against the Jews and the Pope in his late years are all too well known. According to a common conviction, we see an old man spreading his anger and frustration into the world here, and this holds to a certain degree. There are some deeper roots, though, of why Luther attacked both the Pope and Jews at once. The talk will trace back these polemics to the reformer's early writings. They show similar parallels and betray the driving powers of Luther's conception of the enemies of the Cross. The talk presents a journey into the history of exegesis, doctrine, and religious conflicts.
